2010: The Start of It All
2010 was our first year of running the Writing Our Legacy programme – and it was also the birth of spoken word and music night Countdown Social Club (“because we’re here all year, not just October”) at Redroaster Coffee House, Brighton.
The night featured musicians, writers and artists, with no budget, but a lot of enthusiasm. The monthly night ran from June to October 2010, and hosted one additional literary showcase on top.
The evening was spearheaded by Tony Kalume aka DJ Task and Amy Zamarripa Solis, with support from the Black History Month volunteer group.
At the time, it was less planned, more spontaneous, acting on the feeling that there should be literary activity for Brighton & Hove’s Black History Month. Our organisation was born from the grass-roots support gathered in this year.
